THESIS ABSTRACT

Title : Skateboarding in Montpellier. Ethnosociological approaches of populations, activities and spaces in tensions.

Skateboarding is an urban physical activity which has changed these last decades. Marketing, « massification » and « sportivization » transform this leisure. Skaters focus themselves on the execution of tricks. With a sociological comprehensive approach we have tried to decipher this activity in Montpellier. A qualitative method has been used to interpret skaters secrets, manners of being and of thinking. Purists try to conserve a subcultural heritage. A field work allowed us to penetrate two groups. With these people and in this city we could encircle tensions and oppositions in this local scene. Elected officials with a skateboard association try to develop the sporting side. Street skaters don’t want this evolution and prefer to stay in the street. Local urbanisation, skaters creativity and peripheral skate-parks show sociological richness of Montpellier, where we can find various styles of skaters. Our analyze allows us to decode the local ambivalences and generation ruptures. Street skateboarding is conserved by purists in spite of the harmful effects because they find a more opening out life style and a special way to think opposed to its sporting evolution.

My Ice Rink my neighborhood,

Health effects generated by an Ice skating rink on kids and teenagers of a Montreal neighborhood,

Private research financed by Québec en Forme

Abstract

This research describes, analyzes and measures health, psychological and social effects on kids and teenagers after the creation of a sport community infrastructure and its uses during winter. This research was based on an ethnographic field work about an ice skating rink built by the Canadians of Montreal Hockey franchise. In this private study financed by a $ 93.000 grant, I demonstrated with a statistical approach the physical activity and social behaviors changes observed in kids and teenagers who had access to this facility. The goal of this research was to demonstrate how this equipment changes this entire community, what I was able to show in a pre-report for «Québec en Forme» (Montreal, Québec, Canada) the main private investor in 2011 (datas and reports are not available).

How does one quantify and qualify the effects on health, socialization and education produced by the establishment of a skatepark or a skate plaza in a neighborhood ? With a grant from an association of skateboard foundations and private skateboard companies, I could, as a sociologist and skateboarder :

Generate scientific results

Demonstrate the positive educational  and health impact of skateboarding and skateparks.
